With jury selection underway in Donald Trump’s criminal trial in Lower Manhattan, the former president’s chickens have finally come home to roost. It feels uniquely appropriate that Mr. Trump will have to endure the scrutiny on his old home turf. He rose to fame here, but was never truly accepted by the old money elites he admired. Gossip columnists at his favored tabloids often received tips from Mr. Trump about himself, even about his own sexual escapades, under the pseudonym John Barron. Mr. Trump expressed interest in the presidency starting in the late 1980s, took steps in that direction in 2000 and considered it again in 2012 before being elected in 2016.

At least that’s the argument their lawyers made in court before Ms. Crumbley, last month, and Mr. Crumbley, almost two weeks ago, were convicted of involuntary manslaughter in separate trials. Prosecutors argued that the Crumbleys did not do enough to secure the gun and ignored warning signs that Ethan was planning to use it. After every mass shooting by a teenager at a school, there is an instinct to look to the shooter’s parents to understand what went wrong. His father said the family had a gun safe but the safe’s combination was the default factory setting, 0-0-0. One factor that’s gotten less attention, however, is how the Crumbleys’ attitudes and actions reflect an increasingly insidious gun culture that treats guns as instruments of defiance and rebellion rather than as a means of last resort.

After her failure to identify slavery as the cause of the Civil War generated a wave of criticism last month, Nikki Haley assured her potential constituents that she had Black friends, and that she understood the war’s origins. By 1975, the number of private schools in South Carolina grew more than tenfold, enrolling as many as 90 percent of the white children in some majority Black counties. Ms. Haley graduated in 1989 from Orangeburg Preparatory School. Orangeburg was the product of a merger between Wade Hampton and Willington Academy, also segregation academies, the former of which was named after one of the largest slaveholding families in South Carolina. The year Ms. Haley graduated, her high school yearbook featured at most a handful of Black students.

And I’m not talking just about George Santos. But I am absolutely, definitely talking about George Santos. His lies are so extensive that a very long list of them compiled by New York Magazine under the heading “Here’s Every Single Lie Told by George Santos” may need to be updated by the time you finish reading this essay. New York City’s mayor, Eric Adams, said that he had long carried around a photograph of an officer who was killed in the line of duty. Despite being hailed as the city’s “first vegan mayor” — the author of a vegan cookbook!

It takes a certain kind of person to write grandiose manifestoes for public consumption, unafflicted by self-doubt or denuded of self-interest. In this vision, wealthy technologists are not just leaders of their business but keepers of the social order, unencumbered by what Mr. Andreessen labels “enemies”: social responsibility, trust and safety, tech ethics, to name a few. But the real problem with Mr. Andreessen’s manifesto may be not that it’s too outlandish, but that it’s too on-the-nose. In the case of ordinary individuals, however, debt is regarded as not just a financial failure but a moral one. (If you are successful and have paid your student loans off, taking them out in the first place was a good decision.

Sitting with uncertainty is hard, especially when social media has primed us to expect perfect real-time information during traumatic events and to want instantaneous answers and resolution. Knee-jerk social media posts are not what bother me most, though. Instead, it’s the idea that not posting is wrong somehow — that everyone needs to speak, all the time. It implies it’s not OK to have any uncertainty about what’s going on or any kind of moral analysis that does not lend itself to presentation in a social media post. If the destruction of Gaza is not the goal, it is a very real possibility, and that should be equally unacceptable.

Like countless other women, I can say from experience that this kind of assault is deeply harmful. Just as we passed each other, he reached out and grabbed both of my breasts, then kept going. For a moment, my brain seemed to reject what had just happened, but my next emotion wasn’t what you might expect. The man had run away, and when I turned, I could see him at the end of the block. I was raped in college, and I rationalized to myself that the assault by the park was relatively trivial in comparison.

Opinion | Michael Oher and ‘White Savior Syndrome’

To the Editor:Re “I Understand Why Michael Oher Is Angry,” by Elizabeth Spiers (Opinion guest essay, Aug. 28):I commend this essay about the lawsuit filed by the former football player Michael Oher to end his legal relationship with the Tuohy family. As a white adoptive mother of two Black sons, I found Ms. Spiers’s piece to be the first analysis that got to the heart of what is so important about this situation. She is absolutely correct that “white savior syndrome” is nothing more than white supremacy in softened guise. In addition to the loss of their biological parents, being adopted by white parents deprived my sons of privacy. While young, every time they were seen in the company of their parents, everyone knew that they were adopted, and that their biological parents had been unable to care for them.

It’s the story of Michael Oher, a young Black athlete who moves in with a white family, the Tuohys, and goes on to play for Ole Miss and in the N.F.L. I was adopted, as Mr. Oher believed himself to have been. And I’m a former equity analyst who’s a fan of Michael Lewis, the author of the book on which the movie was based. Those stereotypes, and the possibility that there is another very different way to tell his story, are at the center of the lawsuit Mr. Oher recently filed. Mr. Oher, now 37 and retired from the N.F.L., is suing the Tuohys because he claims they misled him to believe that the legal conservatorship they held over him was essentially the same as adoption.

Did the world need Arizona Iced Tea-branded Adidas sneakers marketed for 99 cents? Did they attract so many potential buyers that the New York Police Department had to shut the sale down at the pop-up store selling them? The “Barbie” marketing team absolutely understands this, and the absurd brand-collaboration drops have spread with the speed of the 1854 cholera outbreak in London. There’s a real-world Barbie dream house on Airbnb, Barbie Krispy Kreme doughnuts, Barbie rugs and a Barbie Xbox. Surprisingly, there is no Barbie Pepto Bismol, which seems like a natural fit in terms of existing I.P.

The Roy children’s individual ambitions are sometimes risible, but we’re never asked to question why they would be ambitious in the first place. What’s not acceptable, within the moral logic of the show, is the ambition of those characters who were not born into money and power but want to achieve them. In an episode midway through the final season, Tom admits to Shiv that he cares about these things. I do.” He tells her, “If you think that’s shallow, why don’t you throw out all of your stuff for love? “You’re a hick,” she says, “your whole family is striving and parochial.” Striving — that’s the biggest insult of them all.
Although the drug has no major adverse effects, until later this year, New York State requires people to get some training before they can administer it. Dr. Avery, the vice chair for addiction psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medicine, had conducted many such trainings, and in his office that day he got right to it. Still, the drug has yet to become a standard part of the public’s tool kit. Dr. Avery, whose research is in negative attitudes toward addiction, says it’s because legal and regulatory issues were only part of the problem. It shapes the language we use to talk about addiction and the responses we think are appropriate.
